Shatter the myths of dissociation - a debilitating psychological condition that affects over 30 million people globally - with Dr. Marlene Steinberg, author of THE STRANGER IN THE MIRROR: DissociationThe Hidden Epidemic. Now, for the first time, professionals and lay readers alike can learn valuable guidelines for identifying, treating, recovering from, and ultimately understanding this often confusing condition involving feelings of disconnection from one's self.

A NOTE FROM DR. STEINBERG

Dear Friends,

Welcome! I hope that the resources provided in this site will lead to greater awareness about dissociative disorders, as well as alleviate any unfortunate suffering experienced by either you or your loved ones due to misdiagnosis.

Whether you have survived abuse in the home, or a traumatic experiences such as rape, combat, random acts of violence, or extraordinary horrors such as the Holocaust or other wartime imprisonment, there are universal ways in which people dissociate in order to cope with severe trauma. Thanks to a series of significant scientific advances, we can now identity and treat the symptoms of dissociation as accurately as we can anxiety, depression, and other psychological problems.

My book THE STRANGER IN THE MIRROR: DissociationThe Hidden Epidemic is the story not only of these scientific advances, but also the hundreds of trauma survivors whom I have had the privilege of working with over the past eighteen years. Their extraordinary stories provide insight into how we often respond to trauma-and inspiration for overcoming it.

It is my sincere hope that the knowledge of these important advances can and will prevent years of misdiagnosis and ineffective treatment, and thus allow for recovery from trauma at the earliest possible stage.

Cordially,

Marlene Steinberg, M.D.
